New Bishop of Achonry hailed as "the kind of personable, informal bishop who will be close to the people and lead them through a process of mutual listening, consultation and discernment."
A “gifted communicator”, the new bishop has served as Diocesan Youth Director and Director of Vocations and has hosted a successful religious affairs programme on KFM Radio and written a regular column in the Leinster Leader.
“At a time when the Church needs more good priests on the pitch, it feels as if God scored an own goal last Wednesday evening. John was not just a good priest, he was a great one, as tributes of recent days vouch.”
Twenty-five-year-old David Vard from Athgarvan became the first person from Newbridge to be ordained for the diocese of Kildare and Leighlin in over 20 years.
"There must be learning, discerning and maturing in one’s journey, but parallel to it there must also be a rootedness in a diocese or a congregation where an individual one day hopes to minister and serve."
