Archbishop Diarmuid Martin was joined by most of the Irish hierarchy and the Papal Nuncio for the funeral Mass of the late Dr Connell at St Mary’s Pro Cathedral in Dublin.
Expressing his condolences, Pope Francis recalled the late Archbishop of Dublin’s many contributions to the Church in Ireland, especially in the area of philosophical studies.
"I think in the beginning he had no idea of the extent of the problem. But he was the one who said ... we have to know ... I admire his courage ... because it wasn’t an easy thing” – Archbishop Diarmuid Martin.
Archbishop Diarmiud Martin pays tribute to Fr Derek Farrell as “a true friend of the Travelling People” who did not seek any great publicity for himself but placed his talents fully at the service of the Travellers and their place in society.
“One case stands out as being shocking. The NBSCCCI believes considerable work needs to be undertaken by the Order to acknowledge the serious damage caused.”
