PLC anger at support for ‘I Decide’ campaign

By Sarah Mac Donald - 16 May, 2014

PLCThe Pro Life Campaign has hit out at some Oireachtas members’ support for the new ‘I Decide’ campaign promoted worldwide by the International Planned Parenthood Federation.

The campaign advocates abortion without any restrictions throughout the full nine months of pregnancy and for any reason whatsoever.

PLC spokeswoman, Cora Sherlock, said it was “a real shame” that some Oireachtas members were lending their support to such campaigns “without asking any hard questions about what is really going on.”

The PLC described Senator Jillian van Turnhout and other members of the Oireachtas’ backing for the initiative as “indefensible”.

The new IPPF campaign is being promoted by the Irish Family Planning Association.

“It is inexcusable the way Oireachtas members like Senator Jillian van Turnhout are lending support to campaigns such as this that advocate abortion throughout the full nine months of pregnancy and for any reason whatsoever,” Cora Sherlock said.

She continued, “What is even more astounding is that the Senator would support a campaign promoted by the IFPA after staying silent when the IFPA was exposed in the media for giving life-endangering information to women.”

“IFPA counsellors advised women to lie to their doctors and say they had a miscarriage and not an abortion if they had any physical complications following their abortion.”

“The seriousness of what was going on cannot be dismissed lightly. Women’s lives were being put at risk as a result of the IFPA’s advice. It also revealed a complete and total disregard for the welfare of women.”

Commenting on the new ‘I Decide’ campaign promoted worldwide by the International Planned Parenthood Federation Cora Sherlock said, “To be fair, the IFPA and IPPF would make no secret of the fact that the new ‘I Decide’ campaign includes access to abortion throughout the full nine months of pregnancy.”

“Both groups support abortion on these grounds and have a consistent record of blurring the distinction between life-saving medical interventions in pregnancy and induced abortion, where the life of the baby is directly and intentionally targeted. That’s the reality of what this latest initiative is all about,” she said.
