The Taizé community was founded by Br Roger Schutz in 1940 to try to heal the 400-year-old rift between the Catholic and Protestant churches.
His father was a Protestant pastor, his grandmother, whom he loved dearly, was Catholic.
At the entrance to the Church of Reconciliation at Taize, Eaatren France which was built by Germans as an act of reparation for the atrocities of World War II, is the inscription:
‘Be reconciled all you who enter here,
Parents and children,
Husbands and wives,
Believers and those who cannot believe,
Christians and their fellow Christians.’
