Holy Thursday is also called Maundy Thursday.
The word “Maundy” comes to us as an Anglo-French word derived from the Latin word “mandatum,” which means “commandment.” It refers to when Jesus, in the Upper Room during the Last Super, said to the disciples: “A new commandment I give you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, so you also must love one another.” (John 13:34, ).
Jesus knew his day for dying would have to happen soon and he had a final message to impart to his followers. He also knew the apostles, his choice of missionaries, were weak in faith and would need a lot of support, love and encouragement on this journey. He believed in teaching by example. He put on an apron and knelt before each of them and washed their feet to show them the real power of his message – it was one of service to each other!
After this, he spent the night in the garden in prayer to God, his Father, for personal help to face whatever lay ahead and for him, for his disciples and for us. Being a follower of Jesus carries many challenges but at least we know Jesus is with us through them all. We are never alone.
