End discrimination against new Catholic schools in England

By Sean O'Donnell - 26 November, 2017

Catholics across England and Wales are being called upon to put pressure on the Prime Minister, Theresa May, and her Government to honour the pledge, made in the Conservative Party manifesto to reverse the current admissions cap of 50% of faith admissions on all new religious denominational schools. This cap, that which prevents Catholic schools from allowing all Catholic pupils to attend, is considered discriminatory and has been acknowledged as being so by the current Government who have promised to abandon it.

The Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales have launched a call to encourage as many Catholics as possible to write to the Secretary of State for Education requesting that the pledge is honoured and that the discriminatory cap is removed. The Chair of the Catholic Education Service, Bishop Malcolm McMahon OP of Liverpool said, “Being a Catholic should never be a barrier to getting into a Catholic school. We’d be failing our young if our community was to let this happen. Support parental choice. Write to the Secretary of State for Education.”

There is a link on the Bishops’ Conference website to assist people in contacting the Secretary of State as well as their local MP.
