The Godparents
Do the Godparents need to be Catholics?
In the case of a convert to the Christian faith it is usual for a person from the Church to act as sponsor - Godparent.

The sponsor has a mentoring role to guide the new convert in the ways of the Catholic tradition.
Where a child is being baptised the parents are the people whose responsibility it is to bring the child up in the faith.

Godparents assist in this role where necessary. It is usual that the Godparents are Catholic and old enough to be of help to the newly baptised person. Ideally the Godparents should be committed Christians.
