Fourth Sunday of Easter: Known & Loved

I am the good Shepherd
and I know mine and mine know me

just as the Father knows me and I know the Father

(John 10:14, 15b)

The meaning of the rich imagery of today's gospel is not readily available to those of us who live in shepherdless streets. What do we know of sheep who get themselves so easily into trouble and who rely so totally on the shepherd for their ultimate safety?

Jesus tells us today that he is a good shepherd. He will keep us safe and the kind of safety he offers is safety in loving relationship with God. Such is the offer of salvation; safe with God. And it is an offer made to us by a God who knows each one of us personally, knows our habits and hobbies; knows what we need to thrive and be happy. It is a serious offer made by a God who died rather than betray his promises to his people.

And today? The God who lives within you - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - knows you. Jesus, the good shepherd guides his sheep. Jesus' Holy Spirit has, since your baptism been working in you to guide you. With him, you are safe. Take time to listen to him in the gospels, in your prayer, in the wise counsel of others. Trust him to be your daily guide and companion and your life will never be the same again.
