The people of Ireland have a particular sensitivity to holy places. Clonmacnoise, Faughart, Lough Derg, Glendalough - these and many other sites have long been associated with Christian pilgrimages. People have a sense that they have a special atmosphere; there is something holy about them.
Often the journey is important; but sometimes just going to holy places helps believers reach new depths in themselves and get in touch with the divine. There are a large numbers of sites where pilgrimages have taken place. Some of these sites date back to pre-Christian times.
