One of only three popes to have been given the title, "the Great" - the others being Gregory I (d. 604) and Nicholas I (d. 867). Pope Leo I heightened the profile of the papacy as mthe power of the Roman empire declined. He was accepted as exercising authority not only over all the faithful, but over all the bishops as well. 20. St Thorlac of Skalholt (1133-93) patron of Iceland |

Saint Thorlac Thorhallson (1133-93) is the patron saint of Iceland. He was bishop of Skalholt from 1178. His status as a saint was confirmed in 1198 by the Althing (local parliament), but this was never made official by the Catholic Church until January 14, 1984, when John Paul II canonized him officially and declared him the patron saint of Iceland. In 1940 before the Japanese invasion of Thailand there was a reaction against things Western and foreign. In this atmosphere there were pockets of persecution of Christians. This led to the martyrdom of seven Catholics in the village of Songkhon in north-east Thailand. They were beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1989. Patrick Duffy tells their story.
